How Much Prison Time Do Felony Convictions Carry?

Kentucky has a felony classification system that delineates the sentencing range or guidelines for each of its categories. Classes A and B are the most serious offenses with the most stringent and lengthy sentences. Class A felonies, which include such charges as first-degree murder, first-degree arson, and first-degree rape of a child, carry sentences that range from 20 years to life in prison. Examples of Class B felonies include first-degree manslaughter, rape, sex trafficking, first-degree robbery, and drug trafficking. The prison sentence for these crimes can last from 10 to 20 years.

Classes C and D are lower-level felonies. Examples include burglary, theft, forgery, unauthorized use of a credit card, possession or trafficking of a drug or controlled substance, first-degree stalking, or possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. These convictions typically result in a prison sentence of 1 to 10 years.

There are other factors worth noting that have an impact on felony sentences. Some lesser Class C and D felonies may be eligible for probation or pre-trial diversion, depending on their severity and the defendant’s prior history. Conversely, under Kentucky’s Persistent Felony Offender statute, repeat offenders can be subject to stiffer penalties that exceed a felony class’s guidelines. Kentucky also has a violent offender law that requires violent offenders to serve at least 85% of their sentence before they are eligible for parole.
